Grounded raises $5m to expand modular fleet production in Detroit

A larger factory and a vehicle-agnostic box platform will support commercial uses across electric and combustion-powered vehicles.

Grounded raised $5 million in seed financing on August 18. Participants included Also Capital, The 81 Collection, Animal Capital and Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund. The company converts electric and gas-powered vans into modular commercial vehicles.

More applications from a shared platform

The seed financing will fund tooling and research for the box-platform line, the buildout of a 50,000-square-foot Detroit facility, and hiring across manufacturing, engineering and sales. Production was scheduled to begin in August, with capacity increasing through 2027.

Grounded configures a common vehicle platform for uses such as mobile healthcare, food service and field operations. The expansion brings that approach to a broader range of chassis while the company continues making electric recreational vehicles. Shared architecture lets it serve different fleet requirements without engineering each vehicle from scratch.
