Opto Biosystems founders secure £70,000 to develop neural implant concept

Cancer Tech Accelerator funding backed the founding team’s early work on miniaturised brain interfaces.

The founders of Opto Biosystems, now Coherence Neuro, received £70,000 through the Cancer Tech Accelerator to develop a proof of concept for miniaturised neural implants. An August 3, 2022 University of Cambridge report identified Cancer Research UK, Roche and the Medical Research Council as the funding backers.

Ben Woodington and Elise Jenkins were developing small sensors intended to monitor electrical activity in the brain and inform approaches to serious neurological conditions. The award supported this early research; Jenkins had described the grant in a founder update that July.
