SurfAce Cleantech makes a composite coating that strengthens compostable bioplastic films so packaging manufacturers can use thinner, lower-cost material on existing printing lines.

Stronger films on existing lines

SurfAce’s patent-pending composite coating is applied to bioplastic film on flexographic printing equipment, in a manner similar to ink. The company says the coating reinforces the film while fitting into existing production processes and preserving line speed. Better mechanical strength can allow a manufacturer to use thinner film, reducing material use and packaging cost.

A material still being prepared for market

The product is aimed at packaging converters and brands seeking compostable formats that can meet practical performance and price requirements. The coating is designed for different biopolymer films and can be patterned for the package’s use. The company says compostability certification to EN 13432 is still to come; its funding announcement describes industrial development and trials as current work, with market readiness targeted for 2027.
