RheoCarti

Switzerland · Healthtech · Hardware

RheoCarti is developing titanium–hydrogel orthopedic implants designed to reproduce the low friction and shock absorption of natural joint cartilage.

A joint surface designed to behave more like cartilage

RheoCarti combines a load-bearing titanium structure with a cartilage-like hydrogel articulating surface. The design aims to reduce friction and absorb shock more like natural cartilage than conventional hard bearing surfaces. The company is developing hip resurfacing and total hip replacement implants, with a platform that could extend to other joints.

From laboratory work toward veterinary applications

The technology emerged from biomechanics and medical-device research at ETH Zurich. ETH’s Pioneer Fellowship description says the team is advancing from laboratory research toward preclinical validation, with veterinary hip replacement as an initial route toward use and later translation to human joint replacement. RheoCarti is therefore an implant-development company, not a marketed clinical product.
