MetroWeather

Japan · Defense tech

A sensing company developing lidar systems for three-dimensional wind measurement and aerial-object detection.

Reading movement from reflected laser light

MetroWeather's Doppler lidar directs infrared laser light at small particles in the atmosphere and analyzes changes in the reflected frequency to measure wind in three dimensions. The company combines remote sensing with signal processing to make the systems compact and improve observation coverage.

The Uji-based Kyoto University spinout is adapting this technology for object detection, including drones that other sensors may miss. That application is being developed for defense and critical-infrastructure protection.
